Two great figures and former world champions of the World Boxing Association, Oscar de la Hoya and Félix “Tito” Trinidad were part of the Group of fighters who have supported the KO drugs program developed by the WBA.
Both fighters, model of athletes, learned about the program and participated in different times to spread the the message to young people. Practice sports rather than succumb to the curse.
Both Oscar de la Hoya and Tito Trinidad will be induced in the Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, and their WBA family will accompany them at this important ocasion.
Oscar de la Hoya participated in a-three-round exhibition with Gilberto Jesús Mendoza WBAVice President, in an event held in September 2009 in Panama, and that raised more than 20 thousand dollars donated to an institution fighting cancer.
De la Hoya, star of Amateur Boxing, gold medal of the 1992 Olympic Games of Barcelona, with a career that lasted 16 years and a record of 39-6, 30 KO´s, was champion of a dozen titles in six different divisions and fought great figures of the time, and now is a successful businessman.
On September 18, 1999 he fought for the unifications against the Puerto Rican Felix “Tito” Trinidad who defeated him for the first time.
In September 2002 he defeated Fernando “Feroz” Vargas by TKO11 in a unification fight with the WBA champion.
The other former world champion that has supported the WBA KO Drugs campaign is Felix Tito Trinidad, who won the titles in welter, super welter and middleweight divisions besides other organizations.
In September 2008, Tito Trinidad entered the ring to make a three-round-exhibition with Gilberto Jesus Mendoza, and they raised more than 14 thousand dollars that were donated to children’s charity in Panama.
With a long boxing history of 18 years, 42-3, and three world belts. Tito began boxing at the age of 12. As an amateur he made a record of 51-6 in addition to five titles in several international competitions.
With 17 years in the professional world he debuted on March 10, 1990. In 1993, with a record of 20 wins and no losses, Trinidad made history at that time, for several reasons. He managed his first world being 20 years old, and also wrote his name in the list of Champions next to his father’s, who was national champion of his country and also acted as Tito’s manager.
In 2000, Trinidad fought for the super welter weight title with David Reid, at the Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Trinidad won by decision.
He went back to New York on May 12, 2011 and fought William Joppy to win the WBA middleweight by TKO 5.
After 40 victories, Trinidad faced Bernard Hopkins at the Madison Square Garden for the WBA, IBF and WBC. Hopkins won by TKO 12 who was defeated for the first time.
