The Brit Derry Mathews conquered the interim 135 lbs World Boxing Association title in Liverpool, England, las Saturday.
Mathews (38-9-2, 20 KO) beat the Canadian Tony Luis (19-3, 7 KO), N° 9 rated contender with the score 114-112, 114-112, and 115-111 in a fight supervised by Aurelio Fiengo.
The host tried to use his reach to keep Luis at distance, who was always on to him seeking the exchange bothering the new crowned champion.
Both fighters were warned and penalized in the eighth round by the referee Howard Foster.
The British was in trouble in the last stages of the fight, when Luis did his best to flip the actions in his favor.
