Saturday night at Centro Convenciones in Puerto Penasco, Sonora, Mexico, Juan Francisco Estrada (33-2, 24 KOs), aka El Gallo, from Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, retained his WBA Super World flyweight title via KO at 1:16 of round 10 against former WBA World flyweight champion Hernan “Tyson” Marquez (39-6-1, 28 KOs), the southpaw from Empalme, Sonora, Mexico.
Both men came to fight.
There was plenty of give-and-take action in the first five rounds, highlighted by brutal exchanges between the two Mexican warriors. In the sixth round Estrada landed a couple of vicious left hooks to the body that resulted in two knockdowns. In round seven Marquez was knocked down two more times and once more in the ninth before a brutal knockout in round ten. The seven total knockdowns might suggest otherwise, but Marquez brought the fight to Estrada, even following some of those knockdowns, and displayed the heart of a champion.
This was Estrada’s fifth defense of his WBA/WBO belts and suggests a rematch with pound-for-pound superstar and Lineal champion Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez (43-0, 37 KOs) might be in the cards. They fought back in 2012 for the WBA World light flyweight belt in a Fight of the Year candidate which resulted in a very close unanimous decision win for Chocolatito. A rematch unifying the flyweight division is a must-see fight and would bring even more exposure to these rising stars.
