Saturday night at Domo José María Vargas in La Guaira, Venezuela, the WBA made history by presenting an all women’s championship fight card, with four world championships and three regional titles up for grabs.
To add even more legitimacy to the proceedings, Guinness World Records was ringside in acknowledgement of the event’s significance.
In the main event, WBA World female bantamweight champion Mayerlin Rivas (14-3-1, 9 KOs), from Maracaibo, Venezuela, successfully defended her title by split decision after 10 rounds against previously unbeaten Melania Sorroche (11-1-1, 2 KOs), from Manresa, Cataluña, Spain The final scores were 97-92 and 96-93 for Rivas, while the third judge had it 95-94 for Sorroche.
In the co-main event, WBA World female light flyweight champion Yesica Bopp (29-1, 12 KOs), the dynamo from Wilde, Buenos Aires, Argentina, defeated former IBF World female minimumweight champion Nancy Franco (14-8-2, 4 KOs), from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, after 10 rounds to retain her title. The three judges scored it 100-90 and 98-92 twice in favor of “Tuti.”
WBO World female super welterweight champion Hanna Gabriel (16-1-1, 11 KOs), from Alajuela, Costa Rica, successfully defended her WBO belt with a TKO victory over Katia Alvariño (8-3-1, 3 KOs), from Juan Lacaze, Colonia, Uruguay, in the third round of a scheduled 10. “La Amazona” also won the vacant WBA World female super welterweight title in the process.
WBA World female super flyweight champion Laura Linda Lecca (12-2-2, 3 KOs), from Lima, Peru, fought Carolina Alvarez (12-6-4, 9 KOs), from Caracas, Venezuela, to a split decision draw after 10 rounds to retain her title.
Former WBA World female featherweight and current WBA World interim female super featherweight champion Ogleydis Suarez (21-3-1, 9 KOs), from Caracas, Venezuela, KO’d Yarley Cuadrado (7-3, 3 KOs), from Colombia, in the third round of a scheduled 10 to win the vacant WBA Fedelatin female super welterweight title.
In other Fedelatin action, Debora Rengifo (7-2-1, 3 KOs), from Caracas, Venezuela, decisioned Eva Guzman (4-1-1, 2 KOs), from Maracay, Venezuela, to win the vacant WBA Fedelatin female minimumweight title.
And last but not least, Yolis Marrugo Franco (19-9-3, 9 KOs), from Cartagena, Colombia, defeated Ambar Fajardo (8-3, 3 KOs), from Caracas, Venezuela, on points after eight rounds to win the vacant WBA Fedelatin female super featherweight title.
It was, without exaggeration, a great night of boxing, a historic night of boxing in La Guaira, Venezuela.
