The teams of WBA Super middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (36-0, 34 KOs), the undefeated KO King from Karaganda, Kazakhstan, and WBA World middleweight champion Daniel “Miracle Man” Jacobs (32-1, 29 KOs), the Comeback Kid from Brooklyn, New York, are holding talks.
“They are negotiating,” WBA president Gilberto Jesus Mendoza told Sky Sports. “Already, Jacobs’ handlers have sent an offer—the numbers—to [Golovkin’s promoter] Tom Loeffler. That’s what I’ve heard.
“I’m waiting. There will be a time, if nothing happens, that we will call for purse bids.
“I’m looking forward to having one champion in the division. I hope that by this time next year, we will have one champion in each division.”
On the Ropes Boxing Radio asked Golovkin’s trainer, Abel Sanchez, if he wanted a fight with Danny Jacobs.
“Absolutely,” he said, “but you have to remember that when they say things like this, there’s always a second part of it. The second part of it is that they have to ‘make it worth my while, that fight is worth X amount of dollars.’ How the hell do they know how much it’s worth? It’s however the market will bear, there’s only so much in a budget and when he hasn’t made the kind of money that he’s asking for, it’s kind of difficult for a fight to be put together that way.”
Brooklyn’s Barclays Center has been reportedly been reserved for December 10.
Madison Square Garden is also interested in the fight.
