Gennady Golovkin and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez appeared in their last press conference before their bout this Saturday in Las Vegas. The WBA’s “super champion” in the middleweight division and his challenger addressed the press and described how they imagine that mega-fight to unify their belts this week at the local T-Mobile Arena.
The expectations surrounding this fight were more and more evident thanks to the huge amounts of journalists that descended upon the event. Sponsors, promoters and even sports legends like Bernard Hopkins took the mikes to comment on their expectations for this fight. Meanwhile, the fighters awaited their turns patiently to provide their impressions.
Oscar De La Hoya highlighted the importance of this great battle and put its historical importance in perspective. He also thanked the Mexican Legend, Julio Cesar Chavez, for making September 16 (day of the Independence of Mexico) an exclusive date for the boxing stars of his country in the Mecca of boxing. Also, the promoter thanked the people in attendance and predicted a fight with a lot of action and emotion.
Then came the turn of the trainers, who showed respect for their rivals but above all they displayed trust in their charges for this coming Saturday.
“The time for words is over. I know that Chepo and Eddy (Alvarez’s trainers.) prepared Canelo very well, and we are looking for a very tough fight,” said Abel Sanchez, trainer of “GGG”.
Canelo’s team also gave their opinions: “Finally, it’s all done. We’ve been preparing for this type of fight for 14 years and we are prepared to win. These were 10 weeks of intense preparation, and we trust in Canelo’s victory. We tell Abel that Golovkin may have a Mexican style, but Saul has a Mexican style of his own, and he is Mexican to boot”, said “Chepo” Reynoso, who spoke next to his son Eddy.
Finally, it was the turn of the WBA king, the first of the fighters to take the podium. The smile and the gentle personality of the Kazakhstan-native were constant in his intervention, although some of his comments were short and to the point: “I am very happy, I have a lot of respect for Canelo and his team. It will be a great day for us and for boxing. See you all on September 16.”
Canelo didn’t talk a lot either, true to his style in this regard: “I know this is going to be a tough fight. This is what I have always been preparing for. I hope that you will enjoy this fight as much as I will enjoy it.”
During the press conference it was confirmed that the main event will begin at 8:00 pm, local time in Las Vegas. The fighters will climb to the scales on Friday to comply with the mandatory weigh-in.
