The first WBA and INDEPORTES Antioquia Introductory Course for Aspirants to Judges and Referees was concluded successfully, to the satisfaction of the students. During the second day of the course, which took place this Sunday, judges Raúl Caiz Jr., Alfredo Polanco, Gustavo Padilla and Tony Weeks explained the topic in depth.
In the morning, Caiz Jr. and Weeks answered questions from the previous day to clarify all the issues concerning the work of a referee. Padilla then explained the 5 factors that every judge should consider when scoring a round: effectiveness of body punches, clever and intelligent defense, better action within the three minutes of the round, knockdowns, and imposition of fighting styles. Afterwards, Polanco explained the 10-point system for professional boxing scoring.
After receiving the instructions, the students evaluated all kinds of rounds: with knockdowns, clear and close ones, to teach them how to notice the evaluation factors. Therefore, the activity became a pleasant exchange of ideas to clarify doubts.
At the end, the students took a test and the best six of them were given the possibility to attend all the events of the WBA 96th World Convention, which will be held in Medellín from October 30 to November 2. The winners were: Valentina Ospina, Osmary Contreras, John Freddy López, Ever Rafael, Manuel Arroyo and Christian Bautistas; all passionate about boxing and a profession as difficult as that of judges and referees.
It was two days of hard work, but the speakers fulfilled the WBA and INDEPORTES Antioquia’s objectives, two allied institutions in favor of developing the sport in Antioquia, Colombia and the world.
