AMB and Universidad de Antioquia began their journey with Medical Seminar at the 96th annual World Boxing Association (WBA) conference in Medellin on Wednesday, November 1st.
The partnership between the World Boxing Association (WBA) and the University of Antioquia promises to benefit both the school studies and the agency, which aims to use all the advances in technology and health to improve the safety and development of boxing.
The Medical Seminar that took place in the middle of the AMB Convention, held in Medellín, brought together several of the best sports specialists and doctors of the University, who lent their space and time for the different conferences.
The lecturers included Nicholas Rizzo of the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA), Larry Lovelace of the AMB, Natalia Ceballos Feria of the University of Antioquia, Joseph Eastwanik of the AMB, Nelson Rodríguez of the University of Antioquia , Barry Jordan of the WBA, Panamanian doctor Saúl Saucedo, Zaira Basto of the house of studies, and Jorge Ramírez of the WBA.
Anti-doping was the central theme of the meeting but other issues were also discussed such as cuts that occur during fights, hydration techniques, mouth guards, body composition of the boxers, brain injuries, advice to avoid accidental doping, and many other interesting topics.
The University of Antioquia and the AMB will work hand in hand on short, medium, and long term projects in order to complete different studies and reach conclusions that can be applied to boxing in order to improve the safety concerns surrounding fights and fighters.
