Yuberjen Martinez is one of the strongest cards of the Colombian boxing team on the journey towards the Olympic dream. The team participates, along with 9 other countries, in the “Future WBA Champions”, in Medellin and the Olympic medalist talked about the privilege of being in a program like this, organized by the World Boxing Association.

“First of all I thank God for allowing me to be in a camp of this magnitude, for this camp will make history. This means a lot to us, because these are things that we never saw before, the opportunity to interact with many of the opponents that we will meet in the pre-Olympic period, and this is what it is all about, getting to know the strategy of the opponents, and this is very important for the athletes,” assured the winner of the silver medal in Rio 2016 during his training in Medellin.

When the “Tremendo” achieved his feat in Brazil, he was just another fighter on the list. However, he enters this cycle as the big man of the Colombian team and knows very well the responsibility he has on his shoulders: “The responsibility is much bigger than before, in the past I wasn’t known very much but now I’m one of the leaders in the group and that’s what it’s all about. Give the new ones the experience and the motivation for them to go forward and, since I did it, let them take that same reference to fulfill their dreams”.

The Chigorodó native knows that the country expects a lot from the team on its way to Tokyo 2020, and analyzed how he has seen the group, but also his individual expectations now that it has moved from 49 kilograms to 52.

“The group is solid, everyone is focused on what they came for, we are focused on knowing our opponents even more. Personally, to get to know the newcomers in the division. It’s a category that my partner Ceiber Avila is leaving and expectations are high because I plan to respond at the same level as he did,” concluded the 28-year-old fighter.
