She is one of the boxers with more titles in the history of the amateur world. She has been the first Indian woman to be consecrated on a ring and the first to give so many medals to her country. If you don’t know what to do at home anymore, here is a very good option for you to share with your family.

Mary Kom became a warrior of life from the moment she discovered that she loved boxing and used it as a means of channelling her convictions. Throughout the film, which should be understood as a true story made into fiction, the struggling spirit of a “stubborn” woman, who is passionate about life and boxing, is highlighted.

She broke down the barriers within a society plagued by traditions where women had to do domestic chores primarily as well as issues of social degradation when they show the scene where she decides to look for a job so she can help her husband after having the twins and stop her boxing career in full swing: “you have knocked out your career” told her the trainer when Mary decides to get married and the first pregnancy arrives.

The film has several aspects to consider about the human values that lead you to make history, like crossing the barriers of your origins, since Mary was born in a family of farmers and you could say that she was destined to follow those steps, however, she decided to go further to be the one who dreamed. In addition, the hard task of placing her dreams high and above her own family when her father puts her to the extreme of having to decide between him and boxing.

But it does not only the individual part but also the importance of teamwork with those who trust you as the coach Najrit Singh did since he set out to train her. Although he expressed his deep anger when she got married, later when Mary returns, the relationship is restored by the recognition of the courage that this boxer always showed since her teenage years when they first met in the gym in Manipur (her hometown) and Najrit took a month to accept her.

After she marries and has children, as time goes by, her husband notices Mary’s pain for having stopped boxing and he decides to stay and take care of the babies so Mary can resume training. He even surprises her, in a beautiful act of love, by signing her up for the national tournament. In her return to the ring, she loses, which she feels is unfair, and throws a chair to where the members of the Indian federation were. She was immediately expelled from the national team and forced to apologize in a letter, which Mary eventually agreed to after acknowledging her husband’s efforts on her behalf.

She absorbed the humiliation and poison to make it her strength. She made it to the 2006 World Cup in India where, just before the fights, the team had no resources, neither food nor adequate preparation for performance, and she faced them by provoking the support of all her teammates. At the end of one of the finals, moments before going up to fight, Mary learns that one of her sons was undergoing surgery: he went up to fight with tears in her eyes (one of the best passages of the film) and ends up winning at the same time that she celebrates the call that said everything went well in her son’s surgery. Incredible strength.

Mary Kom or Mangte Chungneijan as her original name is, today at the age of 37 she continues to be an inspiration to the Indian Nation as a symbol of perseverance, conviction, justice and passion. A demonstration that dreams can be fulfilled above all by listening to ourselves and extending that love to the whole world regardless of the negative voices that want to stop you or all the bad things that may happen.
