Lewis Ritson worked hard to beat Miguel “Títere” Vázquez and win the World Boxing Association (WBA) Intercontinental Super Lightweight title on Saturday.
In the fight held at the East of England Arena in Cambridgeshire, England, the Briton had one of the most complicated fights of his career but managed to win the split decision on the judges’ cards of 115-113, 113-116 and 117-111 to become the new champion.
Ritson had already been Intercontinental Champion in the category and now he regained that title against Vazquez. As expected, the Mexican boxer went all out for the victory and made a great fight as a visitor; however, Ritson knew how to adapt to a difficult fight and win several rounds before an elusive opponent like Vazquez.
This victory is important for Ritson, who is looking for a title shot in the short term. The 27-year-old fighter now has a record of 21 wins, 1 loss, and 12 KOs, while Vazquez left his record at 42 wins, 10 losses, and 16 KOs.
