Jermell Charlo retained his World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Welterweight Super Championship after a draw with Brian Castaño in a best of the year candidate fight on Saturday night at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.

The bout, which was for all the titles of the division, ended with cards of 113-114, 117-111, and 114-114, with which Charlo keeps his WBA, WBC, and IBF belts, while Castaño keeps his WBO belt.

It was an action-packed bout where Castaño attacked at all times and carried the initiative with a relentless attack. Charlo worked walking the ring, counterattacking and trying to land power punches, especially the left hook, which was the one that did the most damage.

Charlo managed to get Castaño in trouble in the second round but the Argentinean showed that his preparation was at its peak and was able to recover to continue the offensive in the following rounds. The American had to deal with that attack and got out of several tight spots during the course of the fight, which was hard for both.

The key to the draw was Charlo, who scored points in the championship rounds and put Castaño in bad shape again in the tenth, although he couldn’t finish him off either.

The draw leaves the rivalry open and the expectation of a second fight between the two. Charlo has a record of 34 wins, 1 loss, 1 draw, and 18 KOs. Castaño now has 17 wins, 2 draws, and 12 KOs.
