Gilberto Jesus Mendoza, president of the World Boxing Association (WBA), visited Jermell Charlo, WBA super welterweight champion, who trains in Houston, Texas, on Tuesday, March 29.
Mendoza had a pleasant chat with the boxer, who talked about his history and the efforts he has made to combine sports with his career in social communication. Charlo also told him that his favorite boxers are Edwin Valero and Joan Guzman, the latter is his current trainer.
“Charlo is a simple and disciplined man. You can feel his passion for boxing and his desire to make history in this sport. His effort to train beyond the ring and to have a university career is admirable. Undoubtedly, it was a pleasant chat and very nice to meet Joan Guzman, whom I also appreciate very much,” said Mendoza. Charlo welcomed the visit of the WBA President and hopes that the organization can soon have an office in Houston to be closer to the pioneer body.
Jermell, who has a record of 34 wins, 18 of them by knockout, one draw and one loss, won the WBA title after defeating Jeison Rosario by KO and had one of the best fights of 2021 against Brian Castaño that ended in a draw and who will face again this year.
