Mexico’s Erika Cruz and Canada’s Jelena Mrdjenovich will meet for the World Boxing Association (WBA) featherweight title this Saturday in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico.
After 15 months, their second fight promises to be full of excitement. In April of last year, Cruz arrived at West Point with few expectations but with a lot of motivation and managed to surprise Mrdjenovich to take the belt from her on North American soil in a great surprise in women’s boxing.
The Mexico City native made a defense against Melissa Esquivel last November and now wants to prove her dominance against Mrdjenovich and beat her a second time.
The veteran Hay River native has been working hard for her return to the ring and has her sights set on regaining the black and gold belt. She is a history-making fighter who hadn’t lost since 2015 until she ran into Cruz and saw her 7-fight unbeaten streak cut short.
Cruz and Mrdjenovich will fulfill several promotional commitments this Saturday and Friday will be the official weigh-in for the fight. Once they meet the regulation 126 pounds, they will be cleared to fight.
