The Purse Bid for the mandatory welterweight bout between the World Boxing Association (WBA) champion and challenger Vergil Ortiz Jr. will be held on Monday, December 12 at the Caribe Royale Hotel, in Orlando, at the Centennial Convention of the pioneer organization.
The WBA sent the official communication to both fighters’ teams for the bidding to take place on the appointed date. Stanionis-Ortiz was ordered in the most recent welterweight resolution and is part of the World Title Reduction Plan, which seeks to have one champion for each category.
The bidding will be held pursuant to WBA rules and will have a 75% split for the champion, while 25% will go to the mandatory challenger. The minimum amount to obtain the rights to the fight will be US$ 200,000.00.
The winner of this fight must next face the winner between Errol Spence Jr. and Keith Thurman, which will leave the 147 lbs. with a single champion in the short term. Stanionis has a record of 14 wins, no losses and 9 knockouts, while Ortiz has 19 wins, all by knockout.
