With both lovers and detractors in the world arena, Gervonta Davis’ career continues to advance and this Saturday he proved, once again, that he is one of the faces of boxing by defending his World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight crown against Hector Luis Garcia with a technical knockout in Washington.
Davis got another win and continues as monarch after an impressive performance. Once again, his strength combined with his good boxing and the element that has been so important to his career, patience, prevailed.
The 28-year-old American went from less to more as he has already done in several fights. His opponent was focused from the first round and took advantage of his reach advantage to keep Gervonta away, as well as counterpunching him effectively in the opening rounds.
But that did not discourage the champion, who adapted his style to the Dominican’s and with a great strategy began to find his humanity as the rounds progressed. Davis used his speed to break the distance and worked with his power punches to hurt Garcia.
By the fourth round Gervonta was comfortable and combining very well with Garcia at all distances, despite the good work the challenger was doing. Davis’ punching volume was too much for the Caribbean fighter, who before the ninth round decided not to come out and the victory was decreed in favor of the home fighter.
Davis started the year on the right foot, remains lightweight champion and now awaits Ryan Garcia for what could be a mega-fight in April. The venue was packed to see Davis in his fight this weekend and he responded with a great fight, reaffirming him as one of the faces of the sport.
