Ireland’s Gary Cully took a big step in his career by defeating Wilfredo Flores this weekend to claim the World Boxing Association (WBA) Intercontinental lightweight belt in Nottingham.

Cully had a great opportunity when he appeared at the Matchroom event where Mauricio Lara and Leigh Wood were the featured fight. Cully made a big impression with a technical knockout in just two rounds.

The lanky 26-year-old fighter took full advantage of the showcase he was given and caused a cut in the first round with a clean punch to Flores’ face, while finishing the fight in the second round with a combination of punches that left him with no response.

He now has 16 career victories, 10 of them by knockout. Flores, meanwhile, left his record at 10 wins, 1 loss, 1 draw and 5 knockouts.
