Saturday night was a party for Saul Alvarez. The Mexican returned home to fight in front of his people at the Akron Stadium in Zapopan, and there was a full house during his unanimous decision victory over British John Ryder.

“Canelo” defended his World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Middleweight Super Champion belt and the WBO, IBF and WBC belts after a dominant performance in which he took cards of 120-107, 118-109 and 118-109.

The Mexican knocked the Englishman down in the fifth round and started hurting him early on. In fact, Alvarez’s punching power caused a major injury to the challenger’s nose, which he had to deal with. 

It was a fight with good exchanges and emotion where the champion always led the action and worked hard to demolish a courageous Ryder, who left a pleasant impression despite his defeat. 

“There’s Canelo for a while,” said the champion after the victory in a demonstration of his motivation for the near future. Despite not getting the knockout, Alvarez dominated the fight, hurt his opponent and put on a great show, which is great news for his career and for boxing.

The Mexican will return to the ring in September, as he has been accustomed to in recent years and although his opponent is not confirmed, he could challenge Dmitry Bivol again for the WBA light heavyweight belt, a hurdle he wants to overcome and which is a pending account for him. 

For now, Alvarez celebrates his victory and improved his record to 59 wins, 2 losses, 2 draws and 39 knockouts. Ryder, on the other hand, has 32 wins, 6 losses and 18 knockouts.
