World Boxing Association middleweight champion, self-proclaimed Greatest Woman Of All Time, Claressa Shields, successfully defended all the belts on Saturday night against Maricela Cornejo in Detroit.
When the bout ended you could see the emotion of both fighters.
On the one hand, Shields had performed beyond the standard, she never underestimated her opponent, she was focused throughout the bout and managed to win with the company of her family, at home. In addition, she indulged in a dance show as she made her way to the ring. She could only smile from the moment she made the initial presentation until the final bell rang.
On the other hand, Maricela Cornejo stayed on her feet for 10 rounds against THE GWOAT despite receiving strong attacks from the world’s No. 1 fighter of the moment. Cornejo absorbed the blows and constantly sought to reach with her boxing to connect with Shields, which she achieved in some passages with little effectiveness.
Shields won unanimously by the judges, adding 14 victories to her record. At the end of the fight, the undisputed 160 lbs. champion expressed her excitement and gratitude for fighting at home and admired Cornejo’s qualities in a show of respect for her. She also stated that she was ready to face the winner of the Crews-Dezurn and Marshall clash at 168.
