The second KO Drugs Day was held on Saturday at the Casino de Buenos Aires and one of the main moments was the consecration of the local Nazarena ‘Capricho’ Romero as World Boxing Association 122 lbs. absolute champion after defeating the Mexican Pailette Valenzuela Cuesta by technical knockout.
It was a bout that received a great deal of applause from the full house on Saturday adrenaline. Nazarena Romero, the ‘Capricho’ girl, was interim WBA super bantamweight champion in 2020, but as she became a mother for the third time, she was unable to defend the belt.
Then, in June 2023 she drew in Buenos Aires against the Venezuelan Mayerlin Rivas for the same belt but absolute and for the month of May of the current year she travelled to Mexico to face Erika Cruz who was until then the owner of the crown after defeating Rivas in November 2023. There, Romero drew again.
However, as sport has revenge, the girl born in the province of Catamarca who grew up with the blows of life that taught her to never give up, stepped into the ring of the Casino de Buenos Aires last Saturday with the steel determination and a surgical precision to define the fight against the Mexican boxer by technical knockout in the tenth round and finally be crowned with the WBA super bantamweight absolute reign.
The title had been vacant after Romero’s draw with Cruz, as the Aztec fighter had tested positive for doping.
The fight between Romero and Valenzuela Cuesta was vibrant from start to finish. Cuesta was on the verge of hitting the canvas at more than one point in the bout, but her iron nature kept her on her feet until the final round when the Argentinian’s punishment overwhelmed her will and the referee had to intervene.
Romero remains undefeated with 14 wins and 2 draws plus the desired coronation and celebrated with tears of joy and much celebration for the effort that led her to the goal.
