At New York’s Yankee Stadium, Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28KOs) stopped previously undefeated Yuri Foreman (28-1, 8KOs) to capture the WBA junior middleweight title. Cotto becomes a three division champion.
Cotto put on the pressure in the first round with his left jab and hard shots. Foreman came out more active in the second round and was using his jab. They traded combinations in the final minute. Cotto shook Foreman with a good right. They were trading some hard hooks at the start of the third. Foreman landed a few good punches, and Cotto threw some of his own in the final twenty seconds.
In the fourth, Foreman landed three hard shots that caught Cotto’s attention. A hard right at the start of the second minute landed again. Cotto used the jab to set up a right hand. They traded in the final minute. Foreman’s nose began to bleed at the end of the round. At the start of the fifth they began to trade. They traded hard left hooks. The tough pace continued in the final minute. The sixth saw Cotto use movement and quick punching to oubox Foreman.
During the seventh, Foreman fell from what appeared to be a slip when he planted his foot and hurt his knee. He was given time and made a decision to continue. Cotto went for the kill and Foreman fell again from a slip, hurting the knee. He was given more time and Cotto jumped on him and began to dish out some punishment. Foreman took the punishment, unable to really move away and began to fight back. During the eight round, Foreman’s corner threw in the towel to stop the fight but Foreman did not want to stop the fight and the referee threw everyone out of the ring and restarted the fight.
After the eight round was over, announcer Michael Buffer told the crowd that someone outside of Foreman’s corner threw in the towel. During the ninth, Cotto landed the left hook to the body, Foreman went down and the ref jumped in to stop it.
