14 years ago former super featherweight champion Takanori Hatakeyama tried his luck against Venezuelan Gilberto Serrano, owner of the lightweight belt of the World Boxing Association. The fight was held in Tokyo and the local won by knockout in June 11, 2000.
Hatakeyama reappeared after a year of retirement and looked for the chance to reign in the WBA again. He had the opportunity before the Venezuelan Serrano, who was making his second defense.
The Japanese sent Serrano to the canvas in the eighth round, and entered the history of his country by becoming the fourth Japanese to win world titles in two different categories.
He reigned until July 1, 2001, when in his third defense, he lost a decision to Julien Lorcy.
He hung up his gloves after the fight at the age of 25. He left record 24-2-3, 19 KO’s.
