The WBA Championships Committee has named Alfonso Blanco interim WBA World middleweight titlist.
The 29-year-old, who fights out of Oxnard, California, by way of Caracas, Venezuela, won the title on October 10 by beating Sergey Khomitsky via unanimous decision at El Poliedro in Caracas, Venezuela. Official recognition was delayed until Chris Eubank Jr. vacated the title on October 24, following his stoppage of Tony Jeter by second-round TKO at Sheffield Arena in Sheffield, England. The Committee had granted Eubank permission to defend his title against Jeter on condition that he immediately vacate it.
Blanco’s status as new interim champ became official on October 25.
A five-year pro, Blanco has won all 12 of his fights, five by knockout, including decisioning Alvaro Robles in June for the vacant WBA Fedecaribe super welterweight title.
