Mexican Esteban Bermúdez connected two impressive right punches in the sixth round to beat Venezuelan Carlos Cañizales by TKO and snatch the World Boxing Association (WBA) Light Flyweight Title from him.
From the opening bell, the boxers started the blow exchange, they fought toe-to-toe and Cañizales was leading. However, the Mexican’s blows made a dent in the South American, who fell on the corner after a right punch in the sixth round, beat the count of 8, but immediately Bermúdez finished the task with another right punch at 2 minutes 38 seconds of that chapter.
“Thank God the blow came, I had energy for the 12 rounds, but thank God this happened and now we have to keep working hard, I have become champion but the most difficult thing starts today,” said the new champion.
The key to the fight for Esteban was that he managed to resist the onslaught of Cañizales: “I think I came here with the hope of being world champion, thank God we are now champions”.
Bermúdez left his record at 14 wins, 3 losses, 2 draws, and 10 KOs, while Cañizales lost the title that he successfully defended twice, and adds the first stain on his record that has 22 wins, 1 draw and 17 KOs.
