Callum Smith moved his record to 25-0 while scoring his 18th knockout victory in the seventh round over George Groves to win the World Boxing Boxing Association Super World Super Middleweight Championship.
With the victory, Callum “Mundo” Smith also won the World Boxing Super Series (WBSS) Muhammad Ali trophy in a historic world title fight that took place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Right from the opening round Smith looked very sharp as he used his length and speed to land on Groves, who couldn’t seem to find the mark as he was moving around the ring looking to counter.
This pattern continued until midway through the third round, when Smith landed the best punch of the fight with a short right hand that stunned Groves momentarily. Groves would recover but the fight was already having the feel of the challenger being in complete control.
For his part, Groves was landing punches in spots – looking mainly for his money punch; the right hand, but could not keep Smith from moving forward on him and timing him out with quicker and more powerful shots that were hard to get away from due to the size and length of Smith.
Groves was trying to slow down the pressure that Smith was applying by going to the body but Smith continued pressing forward and throwing power shots.
