The whole world would say that power is the main quality of the historic world champion Gennady Golovkin, but for his rival on September 15th in Las Vegas, the Mexican Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, that was no problem in his first match where they had a draw this last September. Canelo claims to have the key to achieve a victory when they contest again for the middleweight championship of the World Boxing Association.
Canelo opened his camp in San Diego, California, and from there he pondered the physical conditioning as the key to winning the tiebreaker and assured that it will be one of the fights in which he arrives with the best preparation because a rival that brings the best qualities out of him.
“The first fight gave us the guidelines to win the rematch. We do not necessarily have to change the strategy; we just have to add to what we did. You have to throw more punches in each round. We need to do so that there is no doubt left. For that we are working on physical condition. That’s what we lacked in the first fight to throw punches constantly in each round” said Alvarez through a statement.
“I have faced tough fighters who are difficult to connect blows on in a fight. I have faced strong opponents too. He is a strong fighter. He is dangerous. He is one of the strongest fighters I have faced. This is one of those matches where I will be more prepared than in my entire career” said the former World Super welterweight champion.
Canelo Alvarez, who will complete 66 rounds of sparring this week under the supervision of his coaches Eddy and Chepo Reynoso, ruled out being concerned about Golovkin’s power because that was not what caused him problems in the first fight, but rather his experience.
“Automatically I’m faster than him. My reflexes are faster, so I could see all his punches. But he has a lot of experience. He hit me with a few punches, but that’s because of his experience, and he could see his punches since he started throwing them. In the fifth round he connected with a blow that would knock out most any fighter. It was between the ear and the neck, but I felt nothing.
“I knew who Golovkin was from the beginning. He has been at 160 pounds for practically his entire career. I had always said that when I went up to middleweight I would face the best. He was supposed to be the best, and I felt good in the first fight. His power is not something outside of this world” confessed the Mexican fighter.
Finally, he promised fireworks for the next September 15th showdown on Mexico’s Independence Day because this is increasingly personal “The little respect we had was lost. I will use it as motivation. Everything that has been said has made it personal. I will use it intelligently for my benefit on September 15th. I dedicate this fight to those who have always supported me. To my family and my work team, and to all the people who are going to see this fight. It will be a great fight” he concluded.
