Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez and Gennady Golovkin announced that they will step on the ring for a third fight between them on September 17 for the World Boxing Association (WBA) super championship, the WBC, WBO and IBF belts.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by both boxers and Matchroom Boxing, which assured that the venue of the fight will be announced soon.
“Canelo” and “GGG” have created one of the most important rivalries in modern boxing. They first faced each other in September 2017 in a great fight that ended in a draw. Then, in September 2018, they stepped back into the ring and Alvarez won by majority decision in a tough fight.
Now, they will have their third fight and both come with different realities. The champion Alvarez will return to his division after fighting Dmitry Bivol in light heavyweight last May 7. He will be looking to get back to winning ways and retain his 168-pound championships.
Golovkin knocked out Japan Ryota Murata on April 9 to unify the WBA and IBF middleweight belts. Golovkin will now move up a weight class to challenge Canelo for the undisputed title.
The Mexican comes in with a record of 57 wins, 2 losses, 2 draws and 39 knockouts, while the Kazakh has 42 wins, 1 loss, 1 draw and 37 knockouts.
