Saul “Canelo” Alvarez proved that he is the big man at 168 pounds and defeated Gennady Golovkin on Saturday night by scores of 116-112, 115-113 and 115-113, during the third fight between the two for his World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Middleweight Super Championship and his WBC, IBF and WBO titles.
The T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, had an unparalleled atmosphere for a fight that was highly anticipated by the fans. After a draw and a victory for the Mexican, the third fight came and the Guadalajara native repeated the dose with a victory.
Canelo was quicker and more powerful from the beginning and put up an aggressive fight with long punches that sought to hurt the Kazakhstan fighter. Golovkin, as always, tried to make a tidy fight with good use of the jab and trying to connect his right straight and hook.
However, the Mexican was better from the beginning going forward and connecting both to the body and face of GGG to go adding rounds and gain advantage in the judges’ scorecards that in the end were quite close.
Golovkin went from less to more and in the final part of the fight he showed his best version and was able to win several of the final rounds thanks to his jab and some right hands that found Alvarez’s face.
The winner improved his record at 58 wins, 2 losses, 2 draws and 39 knockouts, while GGG now has a record of 42 wins, 2 losses, 1 draw and 39 knockouts.
