The boxing world will close the year with a flourish thanks to the return to the ring of its greatest figure, Mexican Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez. The native of Guadalajara announced that he will fight in Texas on December 19th, against Callum Smith.
Boxing fans have been on the lookout for the past few months regarding Canelo’s chances of returning to action. Various events have kept Álvarez away from the fights, but the World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Champion is now ready to fight for the Super Middleweight titles.
The 30-year-old has not fought since November 2019, when he defeated Sergey Kovalev by KO in a Light Heavyweight fight.
Canelo’s team was emphatic during these months saying they would stay in the gym training despite the circumstances. The work paid off and now he will have his chance to fight in 2020, great news not only for him but for the boxing world.
His rival will be the Super Middleweight Super Champion of the pioneer organization, Callum Smith, one of the most anticipated challenges for Canelo, and a tough test that he will have to overcome if he wants to continue at the top of boxing. “Mundo” is considered the best at 168 pounds thanks to having both WBA and WBC titles, as well as having been the winner of the World Boxing Super Series in that category in 2018.
“Canelo” has a record of 53 wins, 1 loss, and 2 draws, with 36 KOs. Smith has a record of 27 wins, no losses, and 19 KOs.
