The rematch between Jermell Charlo and Brian Castaño is one of the most anticipated fights of 2022. Both will fight for the second time on May 14 for the World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Welterweight Super Championship, the WBC, IBF and WBO belts.
The American is the owner of the black and gold belt, and the WBC and IBF, while the Argentinean owns Argentine owns the WBA belt. The winner will be the undisputed 154 lbs. champion.
In July 2021 they fought in San Antonio during a fight that ended in a draw and was one of the best of the year. Now they fight in Los Angeles in a fight that is expected to be equal or better than the previous one.
Charlo has good boxing tools and manages well the distance but he showed that he is capable of going toe to toe when the opponent puts enough pressure as is the case with Castaño.
The South American is a punching machine, has the strength to withstand 12 rounds of exchanges and already forced Charlo to get into his territory during the first fight.
For this second bout, the ability of both fighters to make exchanges will be of great value. In theory it seems that Charlo might have a better chance of changing strategy and adapting, but for that he needs to override Castaño’s style, something that no one has been able to do so far.
The boxing world has been waiting for the fight that was first schedulled in March, but due to an injury suffered by Castaño, the date will be in May. Now, everything is set for the rematch.
