Jermell Charlo became the undisputed super welterweight champion with a spectacular 10th round knockout over Brian Castaño this Saturday night during their rematch held at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

The World Boxing Association (WBA) super champion retained his crown as well as the WBC and IBF versions, and took the WBO crown from his opponent.

As promised, Charlo came out to make a much more intelligent and aggressive fight at the same time. The American had said that this time he did not intend to leave the job in the hands of the judges and got the knockout he was longing for against an opponent who caused him big problems in a clear candidate for fight of the year.

As expected, Charlo came out to use his movements on the ring while the Argentinean was pressing and going forward. The American’s counter attacks were felt from the beginning of the fight and it was already noticeable how his body shots and his left hook began to hurt the tough and brave Castaño.

Although he went through significant moments of pressure, Charlo seemed to be in control for most of the fight, punching hard and getting the best of the exchanges.

In round 10 he landed a left hook to the South American’s forehead and the South American collapsed dramatically. Although he got up, Charlo went on top of him and knocked him down again with combinations and the referee decided to stop the count to decree the victory in favor of the lanky champion.

It was an outstanding performance against a very tough opponent and one of the best fights of 2022 so far. Charlo showed great ability to make adjustments and improved his record to 35 wins, 1 loss, 1 draw and 19 knockouts. Castaño lost his undefeated record and now has 17 wins, 1 loss, 2 draws and 12 knockouts.
