The fight between Gervonta Davis and Rolando Romero already has a date and venue. On May 28, “Tank” will defend his World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight crown against “Rolly” at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Davis and Romero will meet in a WBA mandatory bout in a matchup of young and talented fighters that has generated a lot of excitement among the public.
The two were scheduled to fight last year but the challenger’s legal problems prevented him from stepping into the ring on the scheduled date, so Davis had to face Isaac Cruz in December.
The champion is one of the top 135-pound boxers and won his crown on December 28, 2019 by defeating Cuba’s Yuriorkis Gamboa. He has since defeated Leo Santa Cruz, Mario Barrios and Cruz himself consecutively to complete three defenses.
Romero arrives as mandatory challenger because he was the interim champion of the category when the WBA began the plan to reduce the number of world titles. For that reason, the Cuban-American is first in line to challenge for the world championship.
Gervonta is undefeated in 26 fights, 24 of them won by stoppage. Romero, on the other hand, has 14 career wins, with 12 knockouts.
