At Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, Gervonta Davis scored his 20th win and 19th knockout in the third round to become the World Boxing Association (WBA) Super World Super Featherweight Champion, with referee Benjy Esteves stopping the bout at the 2:45 mark after Cuellar was knocked to the canvas for the third time.
The bout was broadcast live on the Showtime premium cable network and all the fans that made the trip from Baltimore to back their man, Davis, were extremely pleased with his performance.
Davis arguably looked the best of his young career, still only 23 years old, as he started off the fight looking very calm and relaxed. Davis let Cuellar come to him early in the fight and was countering with quick left hands.
It was in the second round that Davis was already breaking down Cuellar as he started unloading to the body and knocked down Cuellar for an eight count midway through the round. Cuellar got of the canvas and shook the devastating body shot off like the veteran that he is to make it through the round.
In the third round Cuellar simply could not handle the pressure and heavy hands of Davis, who went back to the body for a second knockdown and then focused on Cuellars head, as he was trying to protect his body, scoring a third and final knockdown that prompted Esteves to stop the fight.
With the win Davis not only became the World Boxing Association (WBA) Super World Super Featherweight Champion, but he also looked like he is back on track to potentially becoming an elite talent in the sport despite his very young age.
