Last Saturday, the Dominican Republic had one of its best days in world boxing history. They won two world titles in the hands of Hector Garcia and Alberto Puello at the Seminole Hard Roach Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida, in a night that will be remembered for a long time.
Neither had an easy challenge. In Garcia’s case, he had to dethrone champion Roger Gutierrez of his World Boxing Association (WBA) super featherweight belt, while Puello was fighting the hard-hitting Batyr Akhmedov for the vacant super lightweight belt of the pioneer organization.
Garcia gave a great boxing demonstration by dominating Gutierrez in the center of the ring from the opening bell. Despite having a wide advantage on the scorecards, he did not relax at the end when the Venezuelan launched an attack and knew how to face him on equal terms despite his punching power.
Puello had a difficult fight with an opponent who put him under a lot of pressure but he got the best of his boxing and knew how to dominate and get the better of the counter attack to get a great victory and maintain his undefeated record.
Dominican Republic now has two new world champions. Solid fighters who want to give something to talk about in the elite and who intend to extend their reigns. Congratulations.
