Gennady Golovkin scored his 38th victory and 34th via knockout over Vanes Martirosyan at the 1:53 mark of the second round to win his historic 20th title defense – tying him with Bernard Hopkins for the most in middleweight history.
The fight took place on Cinco de Mayo holiday at the StubHub Center in Carson California. GGG defended his World Boxing Association (WBA) Super World Middleweight Championship with the bout being broadcast live on the premium network cable giant HBO.
The fight itself did not last long but Martirosyan showed some flashes of his previous world class fighting level in the first round as he caught GGG with some punches that got his attention.
Golovkin came out in the second round all business, however, and put Martirosyan down with a series of shots when his back was against the ropes that ultimately put him down and counted out with a left hook followed by a right hand.
In the post fight interview GGG said that he is willing to fight anyone division and that he simply wants to stay active and clean it out. Many fans are hoping that on Mexican Independence Day in September the Canelo Alvarez fight happens and it would appear that Golovkin is still open to the idea.
