This Thursday, March 9, Gennady Golovkin and his team sent a communication to the World Boxing Association (WBA) to announce his decision to relinquish the WBA Middleweight Super Championship, leaving the Cuban Erislandy Lara as the only 160 lbs. champion.
Golovkin and his team explained that the Kazakh is still not clear about his next step in boxing and they prefer to give up the title since the organization had ordered an purse bid for the mandatory fight against Lara. He assured that they prefer the division to continue with movement and not to make the Cuban’s team wait.
The puncher thanked the WBA for their support throughout his career so far and in every process he has had as WBA champion. He stressed that he is studying his next step as a professional boxer very calmly and is expected to return to the ring as soon as he has solved everything.
Now, Lara is the only champion and the championships committee will study the Cuban’s situation as champion and who he should face in his next fight.
