The Indian Boxing Council (IBC) joins the World Boxing Association (WBA) in conducting seminars for Asian and international boxing officials from February 17th to the 19th.
WBA President Gilberto Jesus Mendoza named the seminar officials during the sanctioning body’s 94th annual convention, which recently took place in Panama City.
Hall of Famer Stanley Christodoulou will oversee the technical-officials seminar. The South African is the first man to referee world championship bouts in all 17 weight divisions, including the November 1983 match between Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Roberto Duran, Hagler successfully defending his WBA/WBC/IBF middleweight titles by unanimous decision.
In addition, Dr. John Hartley Fleming will be in charge of the ringside-physicians seminar. A South African neurologist, Dr. Fleming is a member of the WBA’s Medical Commission. And WBA European Coordinator Mariana Borissova, who has served as an official in more than 150 title bouts, will be in charge of the Supervisors Seminar.
“The Indian Boxing Council is in its infancy,” said IBC President P.K.M. Raja, “and the very fact that the President of the WBA, Mr. Gilberto Mendoza Jr., has appointed three leading world figures from the sport of boxing in setting up frameworks in India gives a clear indication of the potential he sees in Indian boxing.”
