Joseph “JoJo” Diaz moved his record to 27-1, scoring a unanimous decision victory over World Boxing Association (WBA) World Featherweight Champion Jesus Rojas via scores 115-113, 116-112, and 117-111.
Despite the victory, Diaz is not the new champion of the WBA due to weighing in over the 126lb featherweight limit on the scales, as he came in at 126.6lbs, allowing Rojas to retain his title in defeat.
The fight itself took place at The Avalon of Hollywood in California and was broadcast live via Facebook by Golden Boy Promotions (GBP).
It was a very good fight, with Rojas making it a very rough go for the majority of the fight. JoJo got off to his usual aggressive start in the early rounds, only to find out that Rojas is a very rugged veteran with heavy hands and good stamina.
Starting in the third round Rojas started to press Diaz backwards, which we have not seen happen very often as JoJo is typically an aggressive fighter himself.
Pas the third round and into the mid rounds they were very tough rounds to score and could swing either way, as it seemed that when JoJo burst out with his combinations he was scoring well and winning the fight, but Rojas had the more steady pressure and output.
In the eighth round JoJo seemed to finally find his rhythm in the fight, as he boxed very well, outscoring Rojas with his quicker hands and then moving, resetting Rojas to blunt his steady offensive pressure.
JoJo carried this momentum into the coming rounds as he outworked Rojas and was scoring the cleaner blows, seeming to find a second wind. Rojas did finish the twelfth and final round very strong, however, it was not enough to nab the decision.
