WBA World welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs), from Clearwater, Florida, was awarded Boxer of the Month for July by the World Boxing Association Rankings Committee.
On July 11, 26-year-old Thurman successfully defended the title he won by defeating Robert Guerrero four months earlier when he stopped Luis Collazo at the USF Sun Dome in Tampa, Florida.
The dignified Floridian won the interim WBA World welterweight title in July 2103 when he KO’d Diego Gabriel Chavez in San Antonio, Texas. He defended that title three times before the fight with Guerrero at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Runner-up for Boxer of the Month is WBA Super World Light Heavyweight champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (28-0, 25 KOs), the knockout artist from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, by way of Kopeysk, Russia.
In his last fight, on July 25, “Krusher” crushed Nadjib Mohammedi in the third round of a scheduled 12 at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
It was Kovalev’s second successful defense of the title he won from Bernard Hopkins in November 2014.
