The goal that Leigh Wood set himself since last February was completed this Saturday in Manchester. The British fighter set out to regain the World Boxing Association (WBA) feather belt and his unanimous decision victory over Mauricio Lara allows him to become champion of the black and gold organization.
Wood managed to win with cards of 118-109, 118-109 and 116-111 after a fight in which he dominated the ring, put good combinations and even managed to knock down his opponent.
Wood stepped into the ring as the only one of the two who could take the crown. The belt was left vacant as Lara, the previous champion, failed to make weight last Friday. The victory of the British would allow him to become champion again, but in case the Mexican won, the belt would be vacant.
That is why the fight was so important and motivating for Wood, who had been knocked out by Lara in February but got a rematch this time. From the first minute he looked eager and managed the actions very well to take advantage in the scorecards.
In the second round he connected with an uppercut that hit Lara’s jaw and sent him to the canvas, which was a great moment for Wood, who began to gain confidence since then. He fought a smart fight but with a high volume of punches and in the end took a comfortable victory on the scorecards.
The Nottingham native is once again world champion and won his 27th fight, while he has 3 losses and 16 knockouts. Lara, on the other hand, has 26 wins, 3 losses, 1 draw and 19 knockouts.
