Britain’s Leigh Wood was named World Boxing Association (WBA) Boxer of the Month, while Panama’s Jezreel Corrales received the Honorable Mention for the third month of the year.
The WBA released its March rankings and with them the individual awards in a period of a lot of activity and great confrontations in the ring.
Wood earned his award thanks to his extraordinary performance on March 12 against Michael Conlan at the Nottingham Arena. It was an epic fight and possibly the best so far this year with an incredible performance by the WBA featherweight champion, who retained his belt for the first time.
The Nottingham native recovered from a first round knockdown and went from strength to strength, survived the Irishman’s attacks and in the end scored an incredible knockout that send Conlan out of the ring for a resounding and memorable victory.
As for Corrales, he stepped into the ring on March 12 in Panama City and defeated Mexico’s Miguel Madueño by unanimous decision in a lightweight eliminator fight. The Central American looked in great shape and is now aiming for another title shot.
The updated rankings lists are available to the press and fans in the corresponding section of the WBA official website.
