The flagship program of the World Boxing Association is the KO Drugs. From this platform the institution has fought the terrible scourge and has also promoted boxing development all over the world, especially in Latin America.
Now, the initiative of Gilberto Mendoza, President of the WBA, has a new ally: Mauricio Sulaiman maximum hierarch of the World Boxing Council, “Carrying out the KO Drugs together would be formidable. During the opening ceremony of the Rehabilitation Clinic for people who suffer this terrible problem in Culiacan, and where Julio Cesar Chavez was honored, Mauricio asked me join the WBA in a boxing festival in this region” said the boss of the oldest boxing organization.
However, this idea could become a much more interesting project to complement the fight against drugs. “I proposed Mauricio a regional competition format to have the champions of each part of the world face each other, and hence, to promote world title challengers. For example: WBC Latin champion vs. WBA Latin Champion and do the same in other regions” said Mendoza.
In addition, the WBA President stressed that the intention of having this idea come true has always been a dream for him and the organization he leads, because for years this format has been done, but facing regional opponents from the same organization.
“We know it is a difficult task and carry it out is not easy for the nature of this business and the interests of each organization. But the philosophy I’ve tried to share is that while we help emerging markets in countries with limited economic capacity for large developments will achieve the real boxing development” said Gilberto Mendoza.
