During fights over the weekend in Nicaragua, Mexico, and South Africa, 10 bells were sounded to honor the memory of Gilberto Mendoza, President Emeritus of the World Boxing Association, who died last Friday.
In Johannesburg, South Africa, the 10-count was rung prior to the confrontation between local sensation Hekkie Budler and Nicaraguan Byron Rojas.
In Nicaragua they did posthumous honors which were attended by WBA Vice President Renzo Bagnariol, Gustavo Jarquin of the officer corps of the WBA, and the great Mexican champion Jackie Nava.
Meanwhile, in Mexico, promoter Pepe Gomez and WBA President Mauricio Sulaiman also paid tribute with an honorary 10-count as a show of solidarity with the WBA and the Alvarado- Mendoza family.
