The Filipino, Nonito Donaire made and fought four world title fights in 2012, that earned him the recognition as the Fighter of the Year over big names like Juan Manuel Marquez, Sergio Martinez, Manny Pacquiao, Klitchko brothers, the Rusian Gennady Golovkin, Bernard Hopkins, André Ward and other luminaries of today boxing world.

His victories by KO over fighters like Vic Darchinian, Fernando “Cochulito” Montiel and Jorge “Travieso” Arce created him a reputation of invincible puncher before frontal boxers.  He won by decision to technical and fast boxers like  the Argentinean Omar Narvaez and Puerto Rican Wilfredo “Papito” Vazquez as he was unable to reach them because both fighters, eager to finish standing and to avoid being knocked out, gave up their offensive and they devoted to defend themselves and blocking the Filippino’s offensive.

So, before any style, Nonito has looked invincible, although stylist boxers have bothered him the most. He has become an idol in Philippines, even more after Pacquiao defeat before the Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez, even though he was taken to Los Angeles when he was only a boy, and has grown as a local boxer. He is very popular and he is a very nice person and speaks fluent English and speaks Spanish fairly well.

But, ¿What will happen with Rigondeaux?
Guillermo Rigondeaux is another Cuban boxing “Whiz child”. Since his beginning, he has been been a ring phenomenon.  His vast and successful career of 287 fights win only 4 losses proves it.  Thanks to his technique, punches and great physical conditions, he went around the world winning gold on most of the competitions he participated.

In the 2007 Pan-American Games of Rio de Janeiro, he was the favorite and decided to flee with his team mate Erislandy Lara. For reasons unknown, Lara made the connection set and traveled to Germany, but, surprisingly, it was learned that Rigondeaux had been caught bathing in one of the famous beaches of the Carnival City and stunning Garotas.

Once in Cuba the young boxer was demoted from his status and was expelled from the Olympic Team. His wife complained publicly of the ill-treatment he received. This made it harder to get out of the island, which they managed to do some time later. Finally he could settle in Miami and engage in professional boxing. His tremendous experience in amateur boxing helped him stand out soon.

With only 11 fights, 8 of them won by knockout, Rigondeaux is already the WBA Super bantamweight world champion and now he will fight for the WBO and WBC. Althought the titles are not important, knowing who is the best Super bantamweight of the world and whether Nonito will be able to knock out Rigondeau, or if the Cuban will discover and take advantage of any fault in the Filippino’s strategy for the fight to come out victorious.

Their weapons
Nonito, Nonito, we know, is a destroyer. He has very fast fists that he throws in lightning-fast combinations. He does not throw recognitions punches. All of his punches are for knockout, besides he has a lethal precision. From the beginning he will seek to shorten distance to punish opponent and dominate him as soon as possible. He must be the favorite in the betting.

Rigondeaux is a boxer with very fast legs and hands. He is intelligent and moves skillfully. Besides he is not a soft puncher, he has shown he can do a lot of damage with his fists. Has Nonito ever faced a boxer with this wisdom and strength?  Nonito has not been hit yet. What will he do if Rigondeaux hits him?

Another question yet to answer is what will Nonito do with a southpaw who moves faster and is more skillful that Wilfredo Vasquez and Omar Narvaez who made him fight for 12 rounds and wait for the score of the judges. If the Cuban wants to win, he will have to risk at some point and that is where danger is. In his professional career, Rigondeaux has gone to the canvas. Can he assimilate Nonito’s punches power?  Even so, we have the hunch that the Cuban will be able to solve the problems the dangerous Filipino will pose and at the end he will succeed imposing his exquisite boxing and ability.

We will watch this very interesting fight on April 13 in New York, in a very luxury setting, unusual for boxing, the Radio City Music Hall. In 81 years this legendary Theatre, only one boxing program has been staged there. This will be the second one. But that will subject for another article.

Nonito y Rigondeaux – La primera gran pelea del 2013

EL filipino Nonito Donaire efectuó y ganó cuatro peleas de título mundial en el año 2012 lo cual le valió el reconocimiento como el peleador del año por encima de grandes nombres como Juan Manuel Márquez, Sergio Martínez, Manny Pacquiao, los hermanos Klitchko, el ruso Gennady Golovkin, Bernard Hopkins, André Ward y otras luminarias del actual panorama boxístico mundial.

Sus triunfos por nocaut sobre los pegadores Vic Darchinian, Fernando “Cochulito” Montiel y Jorge “Travieso” Arce le crearon una fama de noqueador invencible ante los peleadores frontales. Frente  a hombres técnicos y movedizos como el argentino Omar Narváez y el puertorriqueño Wilfredo “Papito” Vázquez ganó por puntos imposibilitado de alcanzarlos debido a que, en su afán de terminar de pie y evitar un nocaut, éstos renunciaron a la ofensiva y se dedicaron a protegerse excesivamente agarrándose y bloqueando las ofensivas del filipino.

De manera que, ante uno y otro estilo, Nonito ha lucido invencible, aunque los estilistas lo han molestado más. Se ha convertido en un ídolo en Filipinas, aún más después de la derrota de Pacquiao ante el mexicano Juan Manuel Marquez, no obstante que fue llevado a Los Angeles cuando apenas era un niño  y se ha desarrollado como boxeador en esa zona   Es muy popular allí  ya que es un tipo simpático y habla perfectamente inglés y bastante bien el español.

Pero, ¿Qué pasaría con Rigondeaux?
Guillermo Rigondeaux es otro de los “niños prodigio” del boxeo cubano. Desde sus comienzos mostró que era un fenómeno del ensogado. Su extensa y exitosa carrera de 287 peleas con tan sólo 4 derrotas lo demuestran enseguida. Gracias a su técnica, pegada y grandes condiciones físicas, paseó su calidad por todo el mundo cosechando oro en la  gran mayoría de las competencias  internacionales en las que participó.

Hasta que en los Juegos Panamericanos del 2007 en Rio de Janeiro, donde por supuesto era favorito, decidió fugarse de la delegación junto a su compañero Erislandy Lara. Por razones aún no suficientemente aclaradas, Lara estableció la conexión prevista y se fue a Alemania pero, de forma insólita, se supo que Rigondeaux había sido capturado bañándose en una de las famosas playas de la ciudad del Carnaval y las despampanantes Garotas.

Una vez en Cuba, el joven campeón fue degradado de su condición y expulsado del equipo olímpico. Su esposa se quejó públicamente de los malos tratos que recibió. Esto le hizo esforzarse más por salir de la isla, lo que logró un tiempo después. Por fin pudo establecerse en Miami y dedicarse al boxeo profesional. Su tremenda experiencia en el boxeo aficionado lo ayudaron a destacarse pronto.

Con apenas 11 peleas, todas ganadas y 8 de ellas por nocaut, Rigondeaux ya es campeón mundial supergallo de la AMB y ahora disputará  las de la OMB y del Consejo Mundial de Boxeo. Aunque los títulos no son tan importantes como saber quién es el mejor supergallo del  mundo y si Nonito será capaz de noquear también a Rigondeaux o si el cubano descubrirá y aprovechará alguna falla en esa maquinaria de destrucción que es el filipino para llevarse el triunfo.

Las armas de cada uno
Nonito, ya se sabe, es un destructor. Tiene veloces puños que lanza en rapidísimas combinaciones. Casi no lanza golpes de tanteo. Todos son de nocaut, además, tiene un precisión asesina. Desde el comienzo buscará acortar distancia para castigar al rival y someterlo lo antes posible. Debe salir como favorito en las apuestas.

Rigondeaux es un púgil muy rápido de piernas y manos. Sabe usar la inteligencia y se desplaza con habilidad. Además, no pega suave, ha demostrado que puede hacer daño con sus puños. ¿ Se ha enfrentado Nonito con un hombre de esta sapiencia y pegada?. Nonito aun no ha sido golpeado, ¿Cómo se comportará si Rigondeaux lo conecta?

Otra interrogante no despejada es cómo se las verá Nonito ante un zurdo que se desplaza y es más hábil que Wilfredo Vásquez y Omar Narváez los cuales lo obligaron a pelear los 12 rounds y esperar las tarjetas de los jueces. Claro, si el cubano quiere ganar, deberá arriesgar en algún momento y ahí es donde está el peligro. En alguna de sus pocas peleas profesionales, Rigondeaux ha  ido a la lona. ¿Podrá asimilar la pegada de Nonito?. Aun así, tenemos el pálpito que el cubano podrá resolver  los problemas que le planteará el peligroso filipino y al final logrará imponer su boxeo preciosista y su habilidad.

Una pelea por demás interesante la que veremos el próximo 13 de abril en Nueva York la cual, de paso, tendrá un escenario de lujo, aunque inusual en el boxeo: el Radio City Music Hall. En 81 años que tiene este teatro legendario, sólo una cartelera de boxeo se ha montado allí. Esta será la segunda, pero eso será tema de otro artículo.
