Alberto Puello will return to the ring on Wednesday to defend his World Boxing Association (WBA) Interim Super Lightweight title against Mexican Jesus Antonio Rubio in his native Dominican Republic.
The 26-year-old southpaw fighter will face Rubio in the second defense of his title in the event organized by Shuan Boxing in Santo Domingo. “La Avispa” won the belt in July 2019 by defeating Jonathan Alonso and defended it last December against Argentine Cristian Coria.
His next challenger will be the Mexican Rubio, who comes with two consecutive victories and is facing an opportunity he hasn’t had in his career before. The Sinaloa native is 26 years old and although he has gone through some bad times, he is on the mend and highly motivated.
Santo Domingo will have a great boxing night with two world championships, as the event also includes the clash between young Dominican Erick Rosa and Peruvian Ricardo Astuvilca for the WBA Interim Minimumweight belt.
Puello has 18 wins and remains undefeated, with 10 KOs. Rubio has a record of 13 wins, 3 losses, 1 draw, and 7 KOs.
