Californian Ronny Rios became the World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Bantamweight Champion on Saturday night in Carson, California, as he defeated Diego De La Hoya via sixth round knockout.
The fight was very closely contested, with Rios making the deciding factor a right upper to the chin of De La Hoya, who placed a knee on the canvas, then rose to continue fighting but the referee chose to not let him continue in the sixth round.
Both Rios and De La Hoya offered a great battle from start to finish but in the end Rios took the victory in a fairly stunning finish to a fight where he was a pretty heavy underdog.
With this victory Rios left his record at 31 victories, 3 losses, and 15 knockouts. For his part, De La Hoya now has a record of 21 wins, 1 loss, and 10 knockouts.
