At the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, Leo Santa Cruz (34-1-1, 19KO’s) weighed in at 125.4lbs and Abner Mares (31-2-1, 15KO’s) came in at 125.8lbs, both making weight for their title fight at the Staples Center.
Santa Cruz will be defending his World Boxing Association (WBA) Super World Featherweight Title against Mares on Showtime premium network in a rematch of their first bout that took place back in August of 2015. The first bout was a very action packed one, with both fighters combining to throw over 2,000 punches.
Santa Cruz talked about the fans after weighing in, saying “I always fight for the fans and I don’t care if I lose as long as it’s a great fight for the fans.”
He also added “We are both from LA and this is nothing personal, Abner is a class act, we just have to get together and prove who is the best from LA.”
Mares has went undefeated since the first bout with Santa Cruz; stringing together two nice victories over Jesus Cuellar and Andres Gutierrez.
“I let the emotions get the best of me in the first fight three years ago and I am a more mature fighter now and I am going to show it tomorrow night.” Said Mares.
“There is no way I could give a bad show, that’s the type of style I am. I am ready, Leo is ready, and we want to show the world that us Mexicans are united to give good fights.”
The table is set for an exciting matchup between the volume punching champion Santa Cruz and the highly experienced and battle tested veteran in Mares; may the best man win, can’t wait for Saturday.
