Shumenov edges Campillo

In a highly charged rematch, Beibut Shumenov (9-1, 6 KOs) won a controversial twelve round split decision to dethrone WBA light heavyweight champion Gabriel Campillo (19-3, 5 KOs) on Friday night at The Joint inside the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Campillo was cool and accurate as he landed cleaner punches against the wild-swinging challenger. Campillo was cut over the left eye by a punch in round five, while Shumenov was busted up by a accumulation of punches. Campillo seemed on the verge of stopping Shumenov in the ninth round, but his lack of punching power betrayed him as the aggressive Shumenov out-muscled him down the stretch. Scores were 117-111, 115-113 for Shumanov, 117-111 for Campillo. Last August in Shumenov’s native Kazakhstan, Campillo took a razor-thin majority decision in a bout that saw both men hit the deck.
