One of the best fights welterweight can give was confirmed on Monday. The World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight champion will face strong challenger Vergil Ortiz Jr. on April 29 at the College Park Center in Arlington, Texas.
Golden Boy made official the bout that was ordered by the WBA a few months ago and that was delayed due to a surgical procedure that the monarch Stanionis had to undergo. Now recovered, he is ready to step into the ring and put on a great show for the public.
The 28-year-old Lithuanian will be making the first defense of his crown. In April last year he defeated Russia’s Radzhab Butaev in an action-packed bout to take the belt. Previously, he had shown his quality by defeating experienced opponents such as Justin DeLoach or Thomas Dulorme.
Now the challenge will be much more complicated as he faces Ortiz Jr, one of the most impressive prospects in the division and who comes motivated for his first world title shot. The 24-year-old American fighter has knocked out every opponent he has faced and has been a regional champion of several organizations, in addition to being a former Gold WBA champion.
Both fighters are strong, both like to trade and have a firm goal of walking out with the belt in their hands after the fight.
Stanionis has 14 wins, no losses and 9 knockouts. Ortiz has 19 wins, all by knockout.
