The World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight title fight between Eimantas Stanionis and Vergil Ortiz Jr. has been scheduled for July 8 at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.
Golden Boy announced the bout through its official media on Monday and now both contenders are ready for a long-awaited 147-pound fight, which is a WBA mandatory bout.
Stanionis and Ortiz were originally scheduled to face each other on April 29, but Ortiz’s health problems prevented him from fighting on that date. Now, with the challenger recovered, both have been working hard for such an important fight.
Stanionis will be making the first defense of his belt, which he won last April when he defeated Radzhab Butaev by split decision in Arlington. The 28-year-old Lithuanian has a great amateur past and is undefeated in his professional career, which is evidence of his quality and strength in the ring.
Ortiz, on the other hand, is one of the top prospects in the division and will have his first opportunity for a world championship. The American is 25 years old and has an aggressive style combined with a devastating punch.
It will be an interesting clash because of the styles of both fighters. It promises to be a fight full of exchanges between two warriors who are going through great moments in their careers and the possibility of a knockout will be latent at all times.
Stanionis has 14 wins, with 9 knockouts, while Ortiz has 19 wins, all of them before the limit.
